Nothing in dentistry is quite so maligned and misunderstood as the lowly
root canal. While nobody enjoys having their mouth worked on, the root
canal is a tooth-saver and really not that bad. Most people who have pain
with
root canals were already in pain to begin with. Generally the root
canal relieves that pain. Teeth generally need root canals, or endodontic
treatment,
when the pulp inside the tooth begins to die.
Reasons for pulp death include deep decay and facial trauma. The treatment is removal of the dead material from inside the tooth and filling the empty space. Most teeth require a crown after a root canal to protect the tooth from further breakage. Nothing in healthcare is perfect and root canals do fail at the rate of about 1 in 100. Overall it's a good fix for a bad situation and well worth considering if the need arises.
