Choosing a Cosmetic Dentist

In this day and age of "extreme makeovers", interest in cosmetic and esthetic dentistry is at an all-time high. More people than ever are coming to realize that an attractive smile is a valuable asset that can enhance your success in business and measurably boost your self esteem as well as make you attractive to the opposite sex

At this time, there are no states or countries that recognize Cosmetic Dentistry as a specialty. In fact, there are probably less than fifty dentists in the country who do only cosmetic dental procedures. Most dentists must, by necessity, perform a variety of services for their patients. In a way, all dentists are cosmetic dentists, and will say so if asked.

So how do you, the patient determine if you have found an extreme makeover caliber dentist?

  1. Experience: Time is the greatest teacher. How long has the cosmetic dentist been in practice? How many cosmetic dental cases similar to yours have they seen?
  2. Appearance: Are the cosmetic dentist, staff, and facility neat, clean, and up to date? Ask to look around the office and be informed about sterilization procedures.
  3. Willingness to listen: Good communication is everything. Changing your smile is a very personal experience. Will the cosmetic dentist take the time to listen to your needs and concerns in a non-threatening environment away from the treatment rooms? Will they perform a comprehensive exam and treat you as a whole person? Do they offer visual aids such as preview models, mock-ups in the mouth, or computer simulations to help understand what you want?
  4. Credentials: Is the dentist iin good standing with the state licensing board? Where and when did they complete their dental education? Is the dentist a member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, or other professional organizations? Have they completed extensive coursework in cosmetic dentistry to qualify him or her as a Cosmetic Dentist? When did they complete their last course of study. The field of cosmetic dentistry is always developing. Be sure your choice is up to speed on the latest cosmetic dental techniques. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry is a professional organization promoting the highest standards of education and the ethical treatment of patients. Members who pass a written exam, challenging series of case presentations, and an oral evaluation may become accreditied, an indication of their dedication to providing the finest in cosmetic dental patient care.
  5. Finally, Ask to see a portfolio of their dental art and remember to ask if the photos you are seeing are of actual work the dentist has performed. You might also ask if the cosmetic dentist has a list of references from patients he or she has treated.

You may want to start with a consultation visit. Speak to the dentist in a consulting area away from the treatment area which can be intimidating to some.

Developing your beautiful smile is a team effort. The extra time you spend finding a competent cosmetic dentist with whom you can relax and relate is time well spent!
