An implant is a tooth support that is placed directly in or on the jawbone. The device is placed in the dentist's office under local anesthesia. The implant can be used to support permanently cemented bridges and crowns and can be an effective alternative to removable dentures.
In cosmetic dentistry, dental implants are most often used to replace missing front teeth. Especially in cases where placing a bridge would involve removing tooth structure from the adjacent teeth. When combined with careful planning and site preparation, implant-supported teeth very closely mimic the appearance of natural teeth and are easier to floss and care for.
Implants are not for everyone. Smokers, heavy drinkers, and those with certain medical conditions are not good candidates. The overall success rate for implants is between 85% and 95%.
