The methods of detecting dental decay have not changed much over the past 30-50. These include x-rays, metal probes, and visual exams. At best, these methods have about a 70% accuracy rate.
Studies have shown that averages dentists with sharp probes find about 25% of actual decay in the mouth. Most of this is early or incipient decay. Many times, cavities of this type can be repaired with minimal drilling and No Shots.
The Diagnodent Cavity detection system, which has been available in the US for about 4 years, adds a new and valuable tool to help find tooth decay. The Diagnodent uses a small laser to cause decay on the surfaces of teeth to glow. When the sensor detects this glow it produces a number and audible sound. The higher the number and sound, the greater the likelihood of decay.
Like all tools, technique is important. The grooves and pits on the tooth need to be clean and free of plaque, food, sealants, and other debris. The dentist must still use good judgement regarding the informationgiven by the machine so there is still some subjective evaluation.
Diagnodent enables us to detect smaller cavities earlier and with greater accuracy and thoroughness. X-rays may still be used to detect some types of decay, but DIAGNOdent Is a definite improvement in the cavity dtection process and could very well make your future dental experience easier.
